Brief Profile of the Department

The Department of English is the first postgraduate department of the University of Kashmir which was established in 1954 at S.P.College, Srinagar.   From there it was shifted to the main campus of the University at Hazratbal in 1958.  Since its inception the Department has produced numerous scholars who have achieved commendable success in their chosen fields.  Apart from regular teaching and research, the Department arranges extension lectures, seminars and workshops for the professional growth of teachers and promotion of academics.  The Department invites distinguished scholars and academicians from both national and international Universities for a scholarly interaction with the faculty and the students.  The Department has broadened its research spectrum in that a large number of scholars are registered for M Phil and Ph D programmes.  The Department offers 4-semester  M A programme in English for which the eligibility criteria is at least 45% of marks at Three Year Degree Course with English Literature as one of the subjects.  The Department is going to start 9-Month Post Graduate Diploma in Spoken English from 2012 and the eligibility for the same is Graduation in any stream with 50% of marks. All these efforts are responsible for the tremendous increase in the number of students enrolled in 1956 from 7 to 77 in 2005. The Department has been shifted to the second floor of the new Humanities building in 2009 due to the lack of adequate space in the old Humanities building where it had only few rooms.
