Dr Nusrat Jan has been teaching in the Department of English for the last thirty years. She joined the department for the MA programme with a distinguished academic record having secured first position in BA in the state. Awarded the University Gold Medal, she was also adjudged as the Best Female Graduate in 1985. She completed her M A in 1987 and was awarded the University Gold Medal and went on to obtain M Phil and Ph.D. degrees. Having specialised in American Literature, Dr Nusrat teaches a number of courses on American poetry, drama and novel to postgraduate students. Her research interests include American literature, comparative literature, diasporic writing and minority writing; she has been guiding research in these and other areas. A number of Ph.D. scholars are currently working under her supervision. She has authored a number of articles published in national journals and co-edited several English textbooks taught at undergraduate level. An avid translator, she has translated numerous Kashmiri short stories and poems into English. She co-translated the persian poems of Ghani Kashmiri titled The Captured Gazelle published by Penguin under their Classics series. She has been a resource person at a number of translation workshops. Dr Nusrat participated in the Study of the United States Institute on Contemporary American Literature in 2013 organised by the US Department of State.
